Prerequisites
General Prerequisites
The course introduces students to basic concepts and issues concerning the study of lan-guage as a social phenomenon, focusing on the role of language in constructing social identities. The main theoretical perspectives in the study of social identities are discussed, giving emphasis on the transi-tion from an essentialist to a constructionist approach. The social factors of ethnicity/ nationality (with a focus on the constructions of Germanness/ of the national ‘other’ in Greek society and on the ethnocultural stereotypes associated with these constructions) are analyzed as basic components of a person's identity. The above theoretical concepts are applied to a wide range of texts from popular culture (advertisements, films, TV series) which represent through language (but also visually) different versions of national identities.
