Course Content (Syllabus)
Recently, text and medium seem to be coming back into mutual proximity. This is evidenced not least by the current turn of – at least German-speaking – literary studies towards questions of the medial, which is reflected, for example, in new journals (Media Comparative Studies, 2019), relevant publications, or research projects on "media philology". So, since it is time, our seminar will first illuminate the special mediality of (machine) writing, (language) artworks, and (literary) texts. Moreover, our interest is directed towards those moments in which literature relates to other media: How, for example, does its relation to visual media, to the panoramas of the 19th century, to photography, or to film manifest itself? What happens when it comes into contact with music? And finally, we will not be able to avoid thinking about the status of text and writing in the age of the digital: By noting, as Vilém Flusser observed, that the belief in texts – descriptions, theories, ideologies – is declining and that one urgently needs to acknowledge the techno-imaginary world of codes, might it also be the end of philology?
