Learning Outcomes
Upon succesfull completion of this course students should be able to:
1) understand the basic features of modern Greek history from the early 19th to the mid of the 20th century
2) put the basic facts in their proper historical context
3) understand the process of the formation of the modern greek nation
4) understant the structure and functioning of the modern Greek state
5) familiarise themselves with the methods of historical analysis of facts and processes in modern Greek history

Course Content (Syllabus)
This class offers a critical introductiom to modern Greek history from the Revcolution of 1821 until 1940. Within this framework the class examines the most salient political and social developments including: the position of the Greeks in the Ottoman Empire, the Revolution of 1821, the organisation of the state and the formation of the Greek nation, the parliamentary system, irredentism and the Balkan Wars, as well as the most crucial events of the Interwar period, and the regime of I. Metaxas.
