Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: Upon successful completion of the course, students will: 1. Become familiar with the most important approaches to the social functions of journalism, to the roles assumed by journalists, and to the interactions of the various institutions within and outside of the field. 2. Understand journalism as a dynamic social field. 3. Understand the social functions of the journalism profession and the key factors that determine the practices of journalists' daily professional lives. 4. Understand the mutations in journalism, the most important of their consequent challenges and the concerns they raise.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The main topics covered during this course are the following: 1. Presentation of elementary principles of the sociological approach with an emphasis on the field of journalism. 2. Reflections and concerns about news sources and journalism. 3. Sociological theories of journalism and news sources. 4. Journalists and the production of news. 5. Owners, businesses and politicians. 6. Elites, state and categories of knowledge. 7. Power and political marginalization. 8. Politics, media and the marginalized. 9. Audiences and news sources.

Description
The evaluation criteria include the extent to which the students (a) identify and understand the basic concepts concerning the sociology of journalism, (b) identify the main theoretical and research approaches, and (c) actively participate in the learning process. Based on these criteria, the evaluation takes place through the following procedures: 1. Active participation in the course during the semester and the in-class presentations (40%) 2. Final multiple-choice test (60%).
