Upon successful completion of the course students will: - Understand, assimilate and reproduce the evolution, course, and configuration of the Church -describe and analyze the most important phases of its history - evolve their knowledge and will work scientifically on it.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The historical development and the most important events concerning the historical life of the Church and connected with its nature and mission in the world, from the end of the persecutions onwards. The life of the Church and the formation of relations with the state. The evolution of the church organization. The Christianization of Europe. The split of the Christian world into Eastern and Western. The inner life of the Churches. Attempts at reunification. 1. The legalization of Christianity and the relations between the Church and the state. 2. Arianism and the first two Ecumenical Councils. 3. The Christological disputes. The Fourth Ecumenical Council. 4. Antichalcedonism and Neochalcedonism. Fifth Ecumenical Council. 5. Monoenergeticism and monovolitionism. 6. Iconoclasm. 7. The evolution of the administrative system of the Church. 8. Mission. 9. Rome and Constantinople. 10. The Schism of 1054. 11. The Church of the East. 12. The Church of the West. 13. The Council of Ferrara Florence
