Learning Outcomes
Medical students who will attend the program of lessons will become aware of the large number of benign and malignant neoplasms which affect the chest. Neoplasms may originate from the organ and structures of the chest (primary) or may represent metastases to the thoracic organs and structures from extrathoracic neoplasms.
Medical students will become familiar with the various diagnostic, surgical and interventional techniques which are necessary for the establishement of the final diagnosis and staging of the tumor. The students will understand the value of these techniques in decision making in the era of precision (personalized) medicine.
Important objective of the program is the understanding of the principles of surgical resection of benign and malignant tumors of the chest and to gain familiarity with the related terms (such as complete and incomplete resection, complex resection, extended resection, frozen section, histology report).
Students will be informef for the composition of the thoracic multidisciplinary team (MDT) and will become aware for the value of the MDT in the successful surgical management of thoracic neoplasms.
In this context medical students are expected to learn the basic principles of surcical oncology of the chest, the importance of lymph node dissection and the principles and main differences of open, thoracoscopic and robotic surgery in the surgical management of the commonest thoracic neoplasms.
Another important objective for the student is to understandt the main problems that are related with research schedule and implementation in surgical oncology of the chest. The extreme value of collaboration with other medical specialties for the development of important scientific research is also highlighted.
