Course Content (Syllabus)
Mechanical characteristics of the constituent materials (natural stones, bricks and blocks, mortars, wood). Types of load-bearing masonry (unreinforced, reinforced, confined masonry). Mechanical behaviour of masonry under compression, flexure or shear. Strength envelopes, failure criteria and stress-strain relationships. Masonry subjected to vertical and earthquake loading. Typology of masonry buildings. Analysis, design and detailing of masonry buildings under vertical loads and earthquake actions. Damage, repair and strengthening of masonry buildings. Cultural heritage masonry structures (forms of load bearing masonry structures, behaviour under vertical loads and earthquake actions). Principles of preservation, repair and strengthening of cultural heritage masonry structures. Eurocodes for masonry buildings.
