Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- understand the basic cardiac and circulatory physiology
- connect cardiac pathophysiology with clinical manifestations of cardiac disease
- be able to evaluate the main findings of the laboratory exams in cardiology
- understand the main indications that guide surgical management of various cardiac diseases
- familiarize with the basic cardiac surgical techniques

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course syllabus is the following:
history of cardiac surgery; preoperative evaluation; cardiac monitoring; postoperative monitoring of the cardiac patient in the ICU; principles of cardiac anesthesia; inotropes and vasoactive drugs; management of postoperative complications; principles of surgical management of coronary artery disease; beating-heart coronary artery bypass grafting; principles of surgical management of aortic valve disease; principles of mitral valve surgery; principles of tricuspid valve surgery; diseases of the pericardium.

Description
Informatics technology is used for teaching purposes. All presentations have the form of power point presentations. Moreover, regarding laboratory "hands-on" teaching multiple wet and dry labs are performed. Wet-labs include sessions of extracorporeal circulation on laboratory animals, while dry labs consist of simulations of extracorporeal circulation and intraaortic balloon pump.
For communication purposes, e-mail and online real-time communication platforms, such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams are frequently used.
