Course Content (Syllabus)
This course is concerned with the analysis of the history of the institutions of art, both Greek and international, and the understanding of their role in the shaping of the artistic production and the politics of curating and promoting art. It focuses on the critical conception of the institutional discourse as a field of pubic sphere and on issues concerning the contemporary composition of the institutional public sphere (curation, international art organisations, etc). With the contribution of invited speakers (artists, curators, art theorists and historians) this course is focused on specific case studies of institutional frameworks mainly of contemporary art, so that the students understand the broadness of issues related to the institutional aspect of art. In particular, this course addresses issues such as: * the formulation of the institutional artistic framework in capitalism, and specifically in the period since the 19h century * the construction of contemporary art as institution * the exhibition politics and the role of curating in the shaping of art * the multiple conceptualisations of the public sphere as politically activated space
