Learning Outcomes
After the end of the course students will be able to: (1) apply compositional thinking, combining the individual political, ideological, social and economic parameters of the historical development of the Mediterranean region during the 20th century (2) understand the interaction between local, national, regional and international parameters and how these influenced the process of transition of the region from the period of colonialism to the era of national emancipation and independence. (3) understand continuities and discontinuities in different patterns and periods of the region's historical development.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course examines the historical transition of the wider Mediterranean area from the colonial period to national emancipation and the creation of independent states. Special attention is given to the spatial structure and characteristics of the colonial possessions in the region, the rise of national independence movements and the impact of the two world wars and the Cold War on the process of decolonization.
