Course Content (Syllabus)
A substantial and comparative study of byzantine topography is given through selected sites from the whole geographic and chronological range (Major cities, minor sites and castles, monastic settlements). Representative monumental entities and also smaller unities are analyzed. Specialized information concerning architecture, monumental painting and other arts are delivered. The meaning and the concept of the monument, the space in general and of the city are explained and their correlation to the residential and natural environment in Byzantium and throughout the centuries. Certain methods and ways of their integration and display in modern world are proposed (Greek law and international conventions, public Archaeology).
