Expected learning outcomes: To have a thorough knowledge of the texts discussed in class/ familiarization of students with traits or tendencies found in the writings by Thomas Mann/ familiarization of students with the fin-de-siècle and early twentieth century period/ Ability to connect texts to their social, historical and cultural context/ improvement of the students critical thought.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Thomas Mann is a magician of narrative art. Besides of his novels he has written numerous short stories and novellas-some of which, like “Death in Venice” or “Tonio Kröger”, are considered masterpieces of world literature. The course aims to give an overview of this work and to analyze some of the most important novellas.Furthermore the translation of selected passages from the novellas could be trained, in order to point out the close relationship between criticism and / or textual analysis and cultural/linguistic transfer.
