Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students: 1. Have understood the basic principles, methods and problems of the cartographic process. 2. They can search, collect, evaluate, georeference, transform and homogenize primary cartographic data from different digital and analog sources. 3. Complete the digital compilation of a cartographic product, primary or derivative map, ready for reproduction in multiple copies.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Cartographic perception. Physical structure of the graphic image. Cartographic Data Bases. Basic principles and rules of the cartographic procedure. Map reliability degree, detail and scale. Map types and purpose of construction. Maps for specialists and for the general public. Internal and external map recognition and reading. Map structure. Primary and derivative maps. Data collection. Data type and sources. Georeferencing. Collection, evaluation, pre-processing of data. Cartographic projections. Data reductions and transformations. Cartographic design. Relief issues. Thematic content of the map. Automatization of composition and production procedure. Principles, problems and optimization of cartographic procedure. Paper size standardization. Map symbolization. Color and color options. Toponymy and writing rules. Communication issues of cartographic composition. Cartographic production. Composition of a map sheet and graphic representation of the symbolization. Multi-sheet maps. Map printing techniques. Materials and systems of design, production and reproduction. Processes and organization of production, test copies, corrections. Reproduction technology and map folding. Updates and revisions. Cartographic documentation and archiving.
