Hydraulics and especially open-channel hydraulics.
Learning Outcomes
After a successful examination in the course, students will be able to: 1. Understand issues of water resources pollution, based on indicators. 2. Understand issues of water resources organic pollution deriving from urban sewers. 3. Know the basic parameters of the development and cultivation of microorganisms, used in wastewater treatment. 4. Know the basic physical, chemical and biochemical phenomena used in wastewater treatment. 5. Know how to calculate a Wastewater Treatment Plant for a population equivalent of 10,000 inhabitants. 6. Know how to assess alternative solutions in wastewater treatment. 7. Know disinfection methods of treated wastewater and treated wastewater valorization methods, in the circular economy framework. 8. Know how to treat biological sludge and stabilized sludge valorization methods in the circular economy framework. 9. Know how to treat and manage wastewater from major touristic resorts.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Wastewater treatment legislation. Pollution and water resources protection legislation. Pre-treatment. Primary treatment. Secondary treatment. Activated sludge. Biological filters. Stabilization ponds. Natural systems for wastewater treatment of small communities and towns. Tertiary treatment. Treatment of nitrogen and phosphorus. Nitrification - denitrification. Disinfection. Treated wastewater disposal: underground disposal and irrigation. Wastewater re-use. Sludge treatment and disposal. Aerobic digestion - composting and vermicomposting - of stabilized sewerage sludge.
