Learning Outcomes
By attending the class, students will be able to: 1. Understand all basic ideas related to solid wastes (source, types, physical characteristics, chemical components, calorific value, etc.). 2. Know the basic waste management systems (generation rate, selection at source, transfer, treatment, etc.). 3. Understand the different treatment methods (sanitary landfills, energy production, recycling, reuse, etc.). 4. Identify best management practices according to European and National targets, related to solid waste management. 5. Know issues on landfills sustainable rehabilitation, and site selection criteria for sanitary landfills. 6. Know aspects of circular economy related to solid waste management. 7. Understand crucial parameters on sustainable development, consumerism and sustainable solid waste management. 8. Know how to participate in public participation and awareness efforts for sustainable solid waste management.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Sustainable development, consumerism, sustainable waste management, waste hierarchy. Prevention - minimization, reuse, recycling, energy recovery, disposal. Sources and types of wastes. Physical characteristics, chemical composition, calorific value. Waste generation rate. Waste collection strategy. Separate collection and door-to-door collection. Parameters for waste collection management. Waste collection issues in cities, rural areas, villages, and touristic areas and towns. Waste transfer stations. Recyclable Materials Collection Centers. Waste Treatment Centers. Alternative fuel production (RDF). Composting. Landfilling. Mechanical-biological waste treatment. Thermal waste treatment. Waste Separation. Waste splitting. Criteria and methodology in sanitary landfilling. Sanitary Landfills monitoring. National Solid Waste Management Plan. Regional and Local Solid Waste Management Plans.
