Course Content (Syllabus)
The course History of Philosophy examines the development of philosophical thought from antiquity to the modern era, analyzing the major schools of thought, key thinkers, and fundamental concepts that have shaped Western and global philosophy. More specifically, it includes the study of the Presocratic philosophers (Thales, Anaximenes, Anaximander, Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Empedocles, Anaxagoras, Democritus), Socrates and the Sophists, Plato, Aristotle, the Cynics, the Cyrenaics, the Stoics, and Epicurus, up to Plotinus. Furthermore, the course explores the fundamental principles and the formation of Patristic and Christian philosophy and thought as well as the cultural factors that shaped Christian doctrine. Finally, it offers an initial approach to philosophical movements from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The study of the aforementioned philosophers and philosophical schools includes the analysis of texts and primary sources.
