Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
-Describe religion as a social phenomenon
-Analyze fundamental aspects of the classical sociological theories of religion
-Value the functions of religion in the modern society
-Shape critically their own view on modern religious phenomena such as fundamentalism, secularization, globalisation, etc.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course aims to introduce students to the sociological approach of the religious phenomenon and examine the relationships between religion and society. More specifically it focuses on the following issues: definitions and functions of religion as a social phenomenon; classical sociological approaches of religion; the functions of religion in contemporary society; the phenomenon of secularization; variations of religious phenomenon in the western world, new religious movements and migrational religions; the issue of fundamentalism; the phenomenon of globalization and the study of religion; religion, nationalism and nationalistic ideology; the relationship between Sociology and Theology.
