Learning Outcomes
The students with the successful completion of the course are able to - describe the problem of ethnophyletism, as it appeared within Orthodoxy - understand both the conditions that contributed to the manifestation of the phenomenon and the means of enforcing it. - relate the historical examples of the Bulgarian Exarchate and the self-proclaimed "Macedonian Orthodox Church" of Skopje with corresponding situations today. - focus on the ways of solving the problem, on the choices of church politics and diplomacy. - combine the condemnation of the phenomenon with the corresponding heresy or schism. - interpret the real motivations of the instigators who starred in the creation of the distorted situation.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The phenomenon of ethnophyletism and its manifestation officially within the provinces of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1870 with the proclamation of the Bulgarian Exarchate and its subsequent condemnation by the Holy and Great Synod of 1872 will be examined. The causes and the role of the protagonists of the events in relation to international diplomacy, political movements and visions (of Pan-Slavism and exit to the Aegean Sea), redemptive claims and the use of either propaganda or armed terrorist groups in Eastern Romilia, Macedonia and Thrace culminating in the Macedonian Struggle, the Balkan Wars but also the Bulgarian occupation during World War I and II. At the end, reference will be made to the transition of ethnophyletism and the transmigration of the redemptive vision in the People's Republic of united Yugoslavia with the establishment of the "Macedonian Orthodox Church".

Description
The evaluation of the students, except taking into account their active participation during the weekly meetings, takes place with the undertaking and submission of a scientific paper, which presupposes the following stages: a) conducting personal research with directions from the teacher, b) processing the bibliography recommended by the teacher or the detection of further bibliographic references by the student, c) writing a short paper (such as at a Conference or a Congress) or an article d) presentation of the work in front of the teacher and the classmates (with a parallel “powerpoint”), e) submission of questions by the teacher and the listeners of the course, f) submission of the final form of the paper, g) evaluation of the final form of the paper based on the observations made - improvements proposed in the previous stages.
