Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students are expected to:
- To have developed skills in innovative ways of collaboration and in setting up and artistically guiding electronic music ensembles
- To have programmed at least one of their own virtual-electronic musical instruments (software)
- To have implemented at least one project in the field of new media arts
- To have experimented in group music performance using new technologies
- Have worked and understood issues of aesthetics, music style, and analysis in computer-music performance, in relation to the medium of technology they use
- To have presented material of their artistic pursuits in a public concert.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Preparation & presentation of computer music and installation artworks by the students (either solo or teamwork)
The laptop orchestra is an orchestra in which portable computers are used as musical meta-instruments, programmed by its members, and perform music in live musical
events. The orchestra will be based at the Department of Music Studies but will be open to all students of AUTh. This is an innovation of our university as this will be the first orchestra of its kind with an official operation in Greece. Orchestras of similar structure and dynamics are currently just very few around the world, mostly at important universities in Europe and America. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laptop_orchestra). Students from different geographic areas can participate actively in such an ensemble via internet transmission of musical data (OSC - networked art). One of the functions of the orchestra is to bring the artistic creation that takes place in the TMS close to the public both inside and outside the city.
