Course Content (Syllabus)
Τhe problem of the dialectal basis of Common Modern Greek is linked to fundamental identity issues of this variety, which are expressed through questions such as: What is Common Modern Greek? What are its constituent varieties? What role did these varieties play during the period of diglossia? During the course, we will attempt to answer these questions by examining the diachronic and diatopic factors that contributed to the formation of Cοmmon Modern Greek, using as a theoretical framework both pre-Fergusonian and Fergusonian diglossia, as well as the theory of the "koine" as it has developed in recent years by Siegel, Kerswill, Trudgill, and others.
