Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Define, recognize, and describe the basic principles and applications of Analytical Chemistry, and compare/relate them to classical techniques of quantitative chemical analysis.
2. Define and interpret concepts such as: solutions, solubility of substances and concentration of solutions, weak acid and base equilibriums, solubility product, ion complex equilibria.
3. Apply and control various titration techniques (acidimetry, alkalimetry, complexometry, manganometry, etc.).
4. Develop laboratory skills related to the above concepts and techniques, ensuring the safety and functionality of an Analytical Chemistry laboratory.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Basic principles of analytical chemistry and classical and instrumental chemical analysis techniques. Chemical reactions and chemical equations, solutions, solubility of substances and solution concentration, reaction rate and chemical equilibrium, equilibrium of weak acids and bases, heterogeneous chemical equilibrium and solubility product, complex ion equilibrium, statistical and experimental data handling, characterization and validation of analytical method. Analytical Chemistry laboratory safety, chemical reagents. Titration techniques. Major instrumental techniques of chemical analysis, such as: ultraviolet - visible molecular absorption spectroscopy, atomic spectrometry, automatic chemical analysis techniques, chromatographic techniques.
