Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be in a position to discuss -basic artistic trends (and grand styles) of the nineteenth century (romanticism, realism, impressionism and symbolism) -the European and US avant-gardes, the politics and aesthetics of artistic movements until World War II -contemporary art and major trends in mass culture since the 1950s

-Introduction to Modern Art: Academies, Salons, Art Criticism, Secessions, Avant-Gardes -Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism -Cubism, Futurism, Expressionism, Dada, Surrealism, New Objectivity, Russian Avant-Garde, Bauhaus, De Stijl -Mass Communication and artistic expression from cinema to the internet -Methods and Approaches in Art History and Cultural Studies
