Upon completion of the course, students will be in a position to discuss
-basic artistic trends (and grand styles) of the nineteenth century (romanticism, realism, impressionism and symbolism)
-the European and US avant-gardes, the politics and aesthetics of artistic movements until World War II
-contemporary art and major trends in mass culture since the 1950s
