Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- understand the basic circulatory physiology behind extracorporeal circulation
- recognize the various parts of the heart-lung machine
- be able to watch the function of the heart-lung machine during open heart surgery
- understand the principles and techniques of myocardial protection
- familiarize with the basic mechanical circulatory support techniques (intraaortic balloon pump, ECMO, VAD, etc).
Course Content (Syllabus)
The course syllabus is the following:
- Introduction in extracorporeal circulation
- Acid-base balance
- Blood gas analysis
- Management of coagulation during extracorporeal circulation
- Principles of myocardial protection; types of cardioplegia
- Preparation for cardiopulmonary bypass
- Cannulation techniques in cardiac surgery
- Tubing; reservoirs
- Pumps (roller - centrifugal)
- Filters; sensors
- Oxygenators. Types, principles
- Connection - weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass; function of heart-lung machine
