Learning Outcomes
After the successful attendance of the course, the student must have:
Theoretical skills:
a) Anatomy and physiology of the eye and the visual system
b) Basic knowledge of refractive errors
c) Understanding pathophysiological mechanisms of the most common eye diseases including the following: ocular surface diseases, cataract, strabismus, uveitis, glaucoma, cornea diseases, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachment and optic nerve diseases.
d) Basic knowledge of Ocular Microbiology and Pharmacology, Imaging in Ophthalmology, and Ocular Pathology (including eye globe, eyelids, and orbit)
e) Ocular manifestations of systemic diseases, ocular side effects of systemic medications, systemic side effects of ocular medications
f) Evidence-based medicine principles applied in clinical ophthalmology
Practical Skills:
a) Basic eye examination: visual acuity, pupil reactions, ocular motility, cover-uncover test, visual fields by confrontation, red reflex, direct ophthalmoscopy
b) Taking an ophthalmic history, in case of any of the following: acute painless vision loss, chronic vision loss, red or painful eye, eye trauma, eye movement abnormality or diplopia
c) Instill ocular medications, flush conjunctival fornices, pad an eye
d) Evaluate ophthalmology clinical cases and formulate differential diagnoses, triage ocular emergencies and describe when it is necessary to refer a patient urgently to ophthalmology
Course Content (Syllabus)
a) Τutorials of practical skills in small working groups (10 -15 students), 6 sessions during 3-week period during the semester, 8.00-11am, on days of the week that have been set by each Department and are communicated to students.
Practical skills will be taught according to the following schedule:
Session 1
perform a basic eye examination
Session 2
evaluate a patient with acute painless vision loss
evaluate a patient with chronic vision loss
Session 3
evaluate a patient with a red or painful eye
evaluate a patient with eye trauma
Session 4
evaluate a patient with an eye movement abnormality or diplopia
describe the important causes of vision loss in children
Session 5
describe when it is necessary to refer a patient urgently to ophthalmology.
Session 6 – Oral exams on above taught skills.
b) Teaching of theoretical skills in 2 sessions a week, 11am-12pm (Amphitheatre E)
c) Attendance at A&E ophthalmology, requirement to attend 8 hours in total
d) Attendance in theatre (optional)
e) Independent studying
f) Attendance of outpatient clinics once a week (optional)
Description
1) Oral exam on taught practical skills, at the end of the 3-week period of practical sessions. This evaluation will be graded on the scale from 1 to 10, and grade >=5 is a prerequisite for participating in the written examination. If the student is graded with <5 he/she will have to take the oral examination again next year, so as to proceed with the written examination. The oral examination grade will represent 10% of the student's final grade (1 out of 10 points).
2) Written exam in the form of multiple choice questions. This examination will represent 90% of the final grade (9 of 10 points). The grade from the oral exam will only be added when the written exam is passed (50%, i.e. 4.5 of the 9 points).
In 45 multiple choice questions, each correct answer will be graded with 0.2 points and each incorrect answer will get -0.1 points (negative grading).
