Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the students should be able to:
• Understand the importance of geological and geotechnical conditions to the design, construction and operation of highway and railway routes and pavements of highway networks and airfields,
• plan the appropriate geotechnical investigation,
• understand the mechanical behaviour of the geomaterials involved and propose improvement methods,
• analyze the behavior of embanκments, cutting slopes and retaining structures, and estimate soil deformation and movement,
• identify geotechnical failures and propose mitigation measures,
• assess the impact of climate change on the resilience and degradation of highway infrastructure,
• propose modern methods of monitoring surface and subsurface deformation and detection of failures along highway and railway routes.
