Learning Outcomes
After the successful completion of the course, it is expected that the students will be able to:
• understand, study and design the building envelope to meet the high-energy performance standards,
• select and successfully combine the construction materials that align with the structural and construction requirements while achieving the optimum energy performance,
• conceive, study, and calculate the energy performance of a building,
• study and suggest building construction interventions in order to upgrade the energy performance of an existing building,
• provide solutions that will minimise the energy consumption of a building, while achieving a thermally comfort and healthy indoor environment throughout the year,
• conduct an energy performance of a building,
• carry out a building’s energy audit.
Course Content (Syllabus)
• Building, climate and energy. Development of energy demand in buildings throughout the building historical development.
• European and national building regulations and legislation framework. Near Zero and Zero Energy Buildings: Regulations, standards and requirements at the European and national level.
• Energy and thermal balance of buildings. Heat transfer phenomena at the building envelope, steady state and transient parameters, thermal inertia, simplified calculation methods and simulation. Thermal comfort and heating and cooling requirements. Solar energy and solar shading.
• Estimation of the energy performance of buildings through software tools.
• Energy Efficiency Study and Energy Audit of buildings.
• Principals of energy conscious design of buildings. Microclimate parameters, orientation, building use, conventional and advanced materials, energy conservation and managements systems.
