Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the students should be able to:
• to plan all the stages of a geotechnical investigation,
• to conduct and analyze the results of laboratory tests such as classification, compaction, permeability, compressibility and shear strength tests,
• to derive the appropriate design soil parameters from the to analyze the results of insitu tests, such as standard penetration, cone penetrometer, pressumeter, dilatometer, vane and plate test,
• to derive the appropriate design soil parameters from laboratory tests
and insitu tests and
• to propose the appropriate field instruments for monitoring the behaviour of geotechnical works and structures
Course Content (Syllabus)
- Geotechnical investigation: general principles, planning, drilling and sampling methods.
- Laboratory tests: classification, compaction, permeability, compressibility and shear strength testing.
- In situ tests: standard penetration, cone penetration, pressuremeter, dilatometer, vane and plate test testing, geophysical seismic tests
- Field instruments for monitoring the behaviour of geotechnical works and structures
