General Prerequisites
It is recommended to students who have successfully completed ΑRX 151 Introduction to Archaeological Studies and ABY 151 - Introduction to Byzantine Archaeology.
Learning Outcomes
With the completion of the seminar, students are expected to -be familiar with the methods of study, analysis and interpretation of archaeological sites and monuments of the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine/Ottoman periods, as well as of relevant artefacts exhibited in museums, - to be able to bibliographically prepare and present oral presentations regarding archaeological sites, museums and monuments, - to make use of recent bibliography and new approaches and methods in archaeology in order to write an essay according to the rules of scientific practice, - to recognise the potential of museums, monuments and archaeological sites offer as complements to classroom teaching, and - to be familiar with the methods of preparation and presentation of a particular site, monument, museum exhibit as part of the teaching procedure.

Course Content (Syllabus)
As starting point for the lesson will function select byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki and exhibits of the Museum of Byzantine Culture of the city. The lesson aims on the one hand to bring the students in direct contact with representative, in terms of date and function, monumental and material remains of Thessaloniki, dated between the 4th and the 15th century AD; on the other hand the main stress will be given to familiarizing the class with the proper use of archaeological terminology as well as of scientific principles of writing. A parallel educational objective is to help the students understand that either oral or written transmission of the archaeological information should be adapted to the needs of any given target group (schoolchildren, wide public or experts). The lesson includes lectures and exercises in the class, as well as visits to the byzantine monuments selected and tο the Museum of Byzantine Culture of Thessaloniki. In the course of the lessons students are expected to make a brief but comprehensive presentation of the subjects assigned to them. By the end of the semester they should also deliver a short corresponding essay, which will be assessed mainly on the basis of accordance to the rules of scientific writing, and take a written exam on archaeological terminology.
