Course Content (Syllabus)
The Greek philosopher Aristotle wrote that “man is by nature a political animal”, that is, he is a being that lives best in cities, or city-states (Politics, I. 1253 A 2-3. III. 1278 B 19). The main subject of the course is the presentation - through a selection of ancient texts in translation - of the evolution of the city-state. In this context, the variety of formal mechanisms and informal processes within the Greek city-states is examined from the archaic period, with the rise and fall of tyrants as well as the gradual expansion of the citizen body, the classical period of the 5th and of the 4th century BC.
