Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will: • develop basic knowledge to manage the problems presented in monuments or historic buildings, where the stone is a load-bearing structural material or the main structural material of the load-bearing organism of the building • become familiar with stone as a structural element of the monuments and historical buildings of the Greek area • become familiar with the problems presented by the stones due to environmental factors such as humidity, wind action, pollutants. • approach methodologies, materials and techniques, required to deal with/rehabilitate the damage. • develop skills for the microscopic identification of stones, for the diagnosis of stone damage and their categorization. • develop skills to recognize the erosion mechanisms of stones, marbles, limestone, sandstone and others

Course Content (Syllabus)
The purpose of the course is to provide and develop the basic knowledge for the management of the problems presented in monuments or historical buildings, where the stone is a load-bearing structural material or the main structural material of the load-bearing body of the building. The aim of the course is to become familiar with the material stone as a structural element of the monuments and historical buildings of the Greek area. Problems presented by the stones due to environmental factors such as humidity, wind action, polluting factors. The following subjects will be developed in the courses: Microscopic identification of stones, diagnosis of stone damage and categorization. Corrosion mechanisms of marble, limestone, sandstone and others, methodologies, materials and techniques that exist to deal with/rehabilitate damage. Basic Bibliography 1.
