Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, postgraduate students will: • acquire knowledge and develop critical thinking about the theories of protection restoration and reuse of industrial heritage and about the contemporary trends that have recently been formed. • be trained both in theory and practice in the conservation and reuse of industrial heritage. • understand the important role that industrial heritage conservation plays in a more sustainable approach to the built environment. • gain knowledge of materials and construction techniques of historic industrial facilities as evidence for conservation and restoration as well as evaluation of historic equipment. • gain knowledge of historical equipment evaluation. • realize the importance of the reuse of historical industrial facilities for the sustainable development of modern cities.

The concept of Industrial Heritage includes a set of stuctures and objects (buildings, constructions, machines, equipment, written or oral records, etc.), all of which deserve to be documented, because they contribute to the knowledge of the history and the productive activities of a country or an area. What is being asked today at an international level is how the abandoned industrial facilities, usually surrounded and cut off from the contemporary urban fabric, will be integrated into it, preserving their historical and architectural character, and how they will be reused for the future development of cities. THE COURSE PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES The purpose of the course is the deepening of postgraduate students in the issues related to the documentation, protection, promotion and reuse of the industrial heritage. The aim of the course is to present the philosophy, the terminology of the various scientific fields and the contemporary trends internationally, through theoretical approaches and presentation of specific examples. THE EDUCATIONAL /TEACHING METHODOLOGY The following modules will be developed in the courses: 1. Industrial heritage as part of cultural heritage, conceptual framework. Industrial heritage categories: a. natural sites of industrial exploitation/ industrial landscape, b. industrial buildings-complexes, c. machines/ tools/ finished products, d. means of communication and transportation, e. workers housing The values of industrial heritage: didactic / universal / social / technological / scientific / aesthetic/ architectural structural 2. History and theory of Industrial Heritage Conservation. The evolution of opinions on the need to preserve industrial heritage (historical, social, economic approach). 3. Interdisciplinary approach. The contribution of the various scientific fields to the analysis, recording and protection of the industrial heritage. 4. The importance of the interdisciplinary approach for the research, documentation, and recording industrial heritage 5. International legislative framework for the protection of industrial heritage, as an integral part of the cultural heritage. 6. The Greek experience and the industrial heritage protection regime in our country. 7. International trends in the protection and reuse of abandoned industrial facilities 8. Presentation of examples of restoration and reuse of historic industrial facilities. The evaluation of the students is done by presenting and then deliver a paper concerning either: a). The research and recording of a part of the industrial heritage (building or ensemble), which has not been restored. b). The study and critical evaluation of the restoration of a building or complex of industrial heritage from Greece or from abroad. EXTERNAL PARTICIPANTS, VISITORS GUEST LECTURERS, ETC, INVOLVED IN THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS Experts provide lectures, guide on the site of restored buildings and ensembles of industrial heritage. Among the experts there will be professionals with recognized work, representatives of organizations such as the Ministry of Culture, etc. TEACHING/LEARNING MATERIALS In each academic period, students have at their disposal: Books and articles found in the postgraduate library or collected for the needs of the course. Master's theses and papers from previous years, completed within the master's program or in other corresponding master's programs. Presentation files, digital files, notes, etc. distributed by the faculty instructors or the invited professors. EVALUATION OF STUDENTS The evaluation of the students is done by presenting and then handing in a paper concerning either: a). In the survey and recording of the part of the industrial heritage (building or ensemble), which has not been restored. B). In the presentation and critical evaluation of the restoration of the industrial heritage building or complex from Greece or from abroad.
