Upon successful completion of the course, students will: • understand the important role of the analysis and documentation of monuments and historical collections in any operation aimed at their protection, maintenance and restoration. • understand the issues of methodological approach for the analysis and documentation of monuments and historical collections • understand historical building practices, as a necessary condition for the restoration of monuments. • realize the important role that the conservation of existing buildings plays in shaping a sustainable response to the built environment. • acquire knowledge to recognize the passive environmental strategies incorporated in the design of historic and traditional structures in order to preserve and enhance them during the restoration process. • gain knowledge about the materials and construction techniques of historic buildings that incorporate environmental values. • acquire knowledge of new materials and techniques used in the restoration of monuments.

ANALYSIS, DOCUMENTATION AND RECORDING OF MONUMENTS AND HISTORIC SITES Course coordinator: Michail-Konstantinos Nomikos Semester: 1 Τύπος μαθήματος Compulsory ECTS: 2,0 Weekly Hours: 3 Total Hours: 24 Faculty Instructors: Maria Dousi, Michail-Konstantinos Nomikos Method of examination (evaluation): Written examination, paper submission PURPOSE OF THE COURSE The purpose of the course is to acquaint postgraduate students with the methods and techniques for the analysis and documentation of historic constructions, monuments and historic ensembles. CONTENT AND STRUCTURE OF THE COURCE The content of the course is the interdisciplinary nature of research for the analysis and documentation of Monuments and historic sites, as well as the development of the methods and techniques of the various scientific specialties. The following modules will be developed in the courses: 1. ANALYSIS AND DOCUMENTATION OF MONUMENTS The aim of this unit is to raise the awareness of the students in reading, recognizing and interpreting the historical architectural environment. The deepening of the multidimensional and multidisciplinary approach for the analysis, documentation and restoration of historical architectural reserve. Methodological approach 1. Relations of the historic building with the wider area (Wider area’s over time (historical) analysis | Wider area’s contemporary analysis 2. Historical analysis and documentation of the monument | construction phases 3. Architectural analysis-documentation of the monument (Typological characteristics | Morphological characteristics 4. Survey 5. Photographic, design illustration 6. Structural analysis, 7. pathology of materials and structures 8. Modern methods of observation and recording 9. Evaluation of build heritage 2. METHODOLOGY OF ANALYSIS AND DOCUMENTATION HISTORIC BUILDING SYSTEMS The aim of this unit is to deepening on the construction technology of historic building systems. The understanding of the way in which structural systems of modern architectural heritage (17th -20th century) emerged and evolved historically, and how they were introduced to the Greek construction practice. The acquaintance with the internationally valid scientific area of investigation related to construction history. The lectures examine three distinct sections of historic structures which emerged in different historical periods, grown in different socio-economic conditions, have distinct typological and morphological characteristics and are made with different building systems. Historic traditional stone and timber framed structures (17th-19th c.). In this unit, it will be examined the following parameters: • The analysis of the structure and materials. Specifically it will be examined the following building categories: stone structures (foundations, walls, etc.), timber constructions (timber frame, roofs, floors, staircases, handrails, etc.), coatings, colors, flooring, doors and decoration. •The examination of the main causes of the pathology of these structures. • The examination of restoration methods and techniques. Historic structures with bearing walls and interior iron frame. (19th - early 20th century.). This section includes the eclectic, art-nouveau, industrial and public buildings of the period. These structures are constructed with bearing walls and interior metal frame (floor beams, columns, trusses). In this unit, it will be examined the following parameters: • The social and historical context of these constructions imported from Europe and their evolution of the 19th-20th century, the typological and morphological characteristics and the ways of their integration into the urban fabric, • The analysis of the structure and the building materials. Specifically it will be examined in detail the following construction units: stone structures (foundations, walls, etc.), brickwork (bearing walls), iron framed structures (roofs, floors, columns, staircases, handrails, etc.), coatings, colors, flooring, windows, decoration. • The examination of the main causes of the pathology of these structures. • The examination of restoration methods and techniques. Historic structures of reinforced concrete (early 20th century). This section includes the eclectic, art-deco, as well as buildings of the modern movement, which are made of reinforced concrete frame. In this unit, it will be examined the following parameters: the social and historical context of these constructions imported from Europe and their evolution during the first decades of the 20th century, their typological and morphological characteristics, • The examination of the main causes of the pathology of these structures. • The examination of restoration methods and techniques. 3. RECORDING, ANALYSIS AND DOCUMENTATION OF HISTORIC SITES AND ENSEMBLES. 1. Students cultivate their sensitivity in recognizing and reading the historically shaped natural and anthropogenic environment and their interpretation and transformation in modern life. 2.Become familiar with issues of analysis and evaluation of the of the historically structured space (natural and man-made) and perceive the complex field of interventions in shaped sites (natural and man-made) and perceive the complex field of interventions in a historical environment, especially in historic ensembles and sites, as well as the requirements and the complexity that distinguishes them. 3.Become familiar with issues of architectural and urban planning, setting goals and specifications and their performance in the historically structured space. 4.Become familiar with legislation issues that governs the protection, town planning and architectural organization of historic ensembles and sites. Methodological approach 1. The relationships of the historical site or ensemble with the natural and anthropogenic (manmade) wider geographical area 2.
