Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will: • be able to understand the organisation and functioning of the institutional framework for the protection of cultural heritage at national and international level • be familiar with the history and development of the institutions and bodies for the protection of cultural heritage from the foundation of the Greek state until today, the evolution of the legislative and institutional framework (from the greek Constitution, to laws, to presidential decrees and ministerial decisions) • know how the institutional framework is implemented through the services and collective bodies, as well as the complications and overlaps with different bodies and services • have an understanding of the role and impact of the international framework (bodies and institutional framework) as it is incorporated into Greek legislation • have understood, through real examples, the conflict issues that arise in the implementation of the institutional framework for the protection of cultural heritage, with emphasis on architectural heritage and the right to own and exploit land.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The following topics are presented in detail in the course: The history of the organization of the bodies and institutions for the protection of cultural heritage in Greece over time. The archaeological service and the Ministry of Culture. The Archaeological Legislation. The Ministry of the Environment. The Ministry of Archaeology and the Ministry of Culture. The Constitution, the Laws, the Presidential Decrees and the Ministerial Decisions for the protection of cultural heritage. International bodies and institutions, their framework and its integration in the Greek institutional framework. Agencies, collective bodies and NGOs and the way they operate in the context of cultural heritage protection. The role of the State and the conflict from the private to the collective. The right to property. Examples and applications of the above.
