About maps and their uses. Brief review of the evolution of Cartography from the paleolithic era up to now. Map scale, map accuracy, detail of cartographic information, map revision, geographical phenomena, Map projections, shape and dimensions of the earth, cartographic distortions, scale distortion, area distortion, angular distortion, extrema and main directions of scale distortion, Tissot’s indicatrix, varying graphic scale. Cartographic generalization, selection, simplification, smoothing, aggregation, classification.
