Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to: 1. Understand the basic concepts and methods of the science of Cartography, so that they can make use of it in the more advanced courses of the following semesters 2. Study more specific topics of mathematical Cartography (map projections) 3. Use digital tools and programming languages for the construction of map projections and the study of their deformations.

Course Content (Syllabus)
About maps and their uses. Brief review of the evolution of Cartography from the paleolithic era up to now. Map scale, map accuracy, detail of cartographic information, map revision, geographical phenomena, Map projections, shape and dimensions of the earth, cartographic distortions, scale distortion, area distortion, angular distortion, extrema and main directions of scale distortion, Tissot’s indicatrix, varying graphic scale. Cartographic generalization, selection, simplification, smoothing, aggregation, classification. Map layout, map margins, map area, grids, graticules, point, line and area symbols, visual arrangement of map information, map readability, map annotation. Map lab for Carto-excercise.
