Learning Outcomes
The course aims primarily at familiarising students with the representation of domestic servants at different historical periods and through different critical approaches. Issues related to dramatic writing, performance, theatre history and gender roles are raised in an attempt to explore the cultural formations and politics of gender and class identity. It is also an intoductory course to theatre history methodology and research as well as academic writing.
By the end of this class students should have:
Familiarised themselves with the wealth of contents and forms in the depiction of domestic servants in theatre and drama.
Learned about gender and class definitions and constructions and being able to discuss them in theatre 'texts'.
Acquired analytical tools that allow them to put a play in its past, present, and future cultural and theatrical contexts.
Students are also expected to learn to work collectively in their projects.

- Domestic servants in history and art: history, theory, terminology.
- Hegel on dominance and subordination/Badiou and Butler on Hegel.

- Domestic servans in 18th century theatre: Pierre Marivaux
- Domestic servans in 19th century theatre: Elisabeth Moutzan-Martinegkou
- Domestic servans in 20th century theatre: Samuel Beckett
Domestic servans in 21th century theatre: Clean City
- Oral presentation by the students on selected articles and books
- Discussion on the written essays: how to choose play and subject/methodology and bibliography.

Student Assessment
Description
The student assessment is based on the evaluation of the student's attendance and participation in the class during the weekly meetings (10%), the oral presentation (30%) and the final essay which will focus on a subject relevant to issues discussed in the classroom (60%) The criteria of the evaluation are presented and discussed from the beginning while detailed guidelines have been uploaded to e-learning and sent to students' emails. .
