Learning Outcomes
Students are expected to
• become familiar with social and economic history of medieval Europe
• be able to evaluate different scholarly approaches to social and economic developments in the Middle Ages during the medieval period.
• acquire in-depth knowledge of a special subject within the thematic unit
• develop further their critical and synthetic abilities to produce a written essay with the use of sources and bibliography
• improve their ability to assess and evaluate historical questions through appropriate argumentation
• become familiar with interdisciplinary approaches to the thematic unit

Course Content (Syllabus)
The thematic unit examines social and economic systems of Medieval Europe (5th-15th c.). It also presents the historiographical debates on the aforementioned issues, as well as the most important research tools.

Week #3 The Development of Medieval Towns: A. The role of trade and craftsmanship. B. Guilds and social organization in towns.

Student Assessment
Description
The evaluation is based on: (a) oral examination (50%), (b) participation in class activities (20%), and
(c) the completion of a written assignment of 3,000–3,500 words (30%) based on primary sources and/or secondary bibliography, to be submitted by the end of the course. The assessment focuses particularly on bibliographic research, source criticism, expression, and the correct application of the citation system. A guide for preparing assignments is available on the Department's website.
