At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand the basic concepts of natural hazard management (earthquakes, landslides, floods)
- Use the basic methods of risk assessment due to natural hazards (earthquakes, landslides, floods)
- Analyse and assess losses and damage to the built environment due to natural hazards (earthquakes, landslides, floods)
- assess the vulnerability of infrastructure and structures to natural hazards (earthquakes, landslides, floods)
- Design buildings and infrastructure based on the principles of resilience, sustainability and viability
Course Content (Syllabus)
- General principles of risk analysis and risk assessment for various natural hazards (earthquakes, floods, landslides)
- Natural hazards and risk: managing the impact on the built and natural environment and on human activities
- Methods for assessing the seismic vulnerability and risk of buildings and civil engineering works
- Seismic vulnerability and risk of housing estates and cities
- Vulnerability and risk assessment of road networks and utility networks (water supply, sewerage, gas)
- Assessment of the vulnerability and risk of flooding of civil engineering works
- Assessment of the vulnerability and risk of civil engineering works to landslides
- Design of structures and civil engineering works according to the principles of resilience, sustainability and viability
- Interaction of infrastructure and networks and examples of design and risk management of the built environment against natural hazards
