Learning Outcomes
1. Students learn to distinguish geological formations based on seismic wave velocities. 2. They learn about the types of seismic waves and their relationship with the hydrogeological and geotechnical characteristics of geological formations. 3. They are trained in recording field measurements and processing seismic refraction data. 4. They are trained in recording field measurements and processing surface waves data. 5. They are trained in recording field measurements and processing seismic reflection data.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The 1st course of lectures comprises of three major sections. It is designed to emphasize on the practical aspects of seismic reflection data processing with hands-on training on Seismic Unix: 1. Fundamentals of UNIX commands and Shell Scripting; 2. Principal seismic reflection processing stages: CMP/CDP Sorting, Velocity Analysis, NMO Correction and NMO Stretch Mute, Stacking, Pre- and Post-Stack Migration (Time and Depth); 3. Introduction to Seismic Unix and direct applications of building workflows of processing synthetic seismic reflection data. The 2nd course includes a description of the "Generalized Reciprocal Method" or GRM-method in seismic refraction prospecting. Examples are given from the application of the GRM-method for the calculation of the refractor depth for each geophone location using overlapping refraction arrival times from both forward and reverse shots. The 3rd course includes a description of surface waves and the proposed methodologies discriminating between Rayleigh and Love waves. Following the different methods depending on the source (active or passive) producing surface waves will be presented. Additionally, the advantages and disadvantages of their use as seismic methods for geophysical prospecting are going to be presented. Finally, the processing techniques (f-k, and Spatial Auto-Correlation) are going to be presented in order to calculate the Dispersion Curve and further to that to calculate the soil model using inversion techniques.
