Learning Outcomes
•Students will understand Quaternary climatic oscillations and their impact on natural systems. •They will be trained on evaluating the various physical and geochemical characteristics of sediments and use them as proxies for paleoclimatic reconstruction.
General Competences
  • Apply knowledge in practice
  • Retrieve, analyse and synthesise data and information, with the use of necessary technologies
  • Work autonomously
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Respect natural environment
Course Content (Syllabus)
•The importance of physical and geochemical characteristics of sediments as proxies for paleoclimatic reconstruction. •A review of the major climatic patterns over the eastern Mediterranean and the Greek peninsula. •Climatic forcing and the transfer of climatic signal to the depositional record. •Proxies that are used for paleoclimatic studies: Isotopic proxies (δ18Ο και δ13C) in chemical deposits (speleothems). Geochemical proxies (e.g. Ca/Mg) both in chemical and clastic deposits Other proxies (grain size and magnetic susceptibility) Morphological characteristics (glacial and periglacial landforms) •Methods in studying the climatic imprint in sedimentary sequences. Examples of applications in varia depositional settings.
