Course Content (Syllabus)
•The importance of physical and geochemical characteristics of sediments as proxies for paleoclimatic reconstruction.
•A review of the major climatic patterns over the eastern Mediterranean and the Greek peninsula.
•Climatic forcing and the transfer of climatic signal to the depositional record.
•Proxies that are used for paleoclimatic studies:
Isotopic proxies (δ18Ο και δ13C) in chemical deposits (speleothems).
Geochemical proxies (e.g. Ca/Mg) both in chemical and clastic deposits
Other proxies (grain size and magnetic susceptibility)
Morphological characteristics (glacial and periglacial landforms)
•Methods in studying the climatic imprint in sedimentary sequences. Examples of applications in varia depositional settings.
Keywords
