Learning Outcomes
During the course, the students will be educated issues about:
• the prospecting of mineral raw materials deposits with geochemical methods
• the environmental impact of the exploitation of ores and energy resources (toxicity of the minerals, major and trace elements, protection measures)
• the geochemistry and its relationship with the environment (trace elements and environment)
• the role of industrial minerals and rocks in protecting the environment
• the effects on human health from mineral constituents of the dust
•the environmental impact studies.
Course Content (Syllabus)
1. APPLIED GEOCHEMISTRY: Geochemical cycle, primary and secondary environment, pathfinder-indicator elements, geochemistry of rocks, geochemistry of soils, geochemistry of river/stream sediments, geochemistry of waters, vegetation geochemistry, gas geochemistry, prospecting of hydrocarbons.
2. ENVIRONMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY: Ores and environment, energy raw materials and environment, trace elements and environment, environmental uses of industrial minerals and rocks.
3. ENVIRONMENTAL MINERALOGY: Asbestos, health effects due to the mineral constituents of the dust.
4. LEGISLATION AND ENVIRONMENT: Environmental studies, mineral raw materials and environmental impact study, national and European environmental legislation.
