Learning Outcomes
1. Rough design of a gravity or magnetic survey in relation to the expected subsurface structure. 2. Understanding the calculations and the necessity of the reductions applied to gravity and magnetic readings. 3. Understanding the Bouguer anomaly and ability to qualitatively interpret the Bouguer Anomaly maps. 4. Implementation and potential of aeromagnetic surveying. 5. Interpretation of land and airborne magnetic maps. 6. Understanding the difference between induced and remanent magnetization. 7. Quantitative interpretation of gravity and magnetic prospecting data.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction to complex functions, Theory of fields, the magnetic field and magnetization of materials, the Bouguer anomaly, transformations of potential fields, interpretation of magnetic and gravity filed anomalies, automatic interpretation methods, examples of gravity and magnetic surveys, demonstration of gravity meters (inside the School) and magnetometers (either along with the undergraduate field exercise or in any survey that the department has undertaken during the semester), laboratory exercises: diurnal correction of magnetic field readings, interpretation of magnetic anomalies in 2 dimensions, use of Potential Fields program suit of United States Geological Survey, mapping software.
