Course Content (Syllabus)
Data concerning the ecology and diversity of fish in the inland waters of Greece. Analysis of the biology of the main fish species. Description of their habitats and analysis of the environmental conditions they need. Detailed description of the diet, reproduction, distribution, utility and ecological importance of inland water fishes. Effects of abiotic factors on inland water fish, as oxygen, temperature, conductivity, salinity, organic salts, pollution and heavy metals. Fish adaptations to temperature, dissolved oxygen, dissolved gases, suspended solids, light and fish coloration. Adaptations of fish movement in running and standing water. Effects of fish with the abiotic environment. Intraspecific and Interspecific relationships of fish and relationships with other organisms.
General description of the fish fauna diversity of the inland waters of Greece and the risks faced by fish species and populations in various habitats (rivers, streams, torrents, lakes, reservoirs, marshes, coastal lakes and lagoons). Endangered species of inland waters of Greece. Categorization in relation to the status of the species and fish populations. Endemic species and fisheries management. Non-native fish species, threats, protection and rational management of habitats, species and fish populations.
