Learning Outcomes
Students are expected to
• become familiar with the development of historiography from the middle of the 20th century onwards
• be able to evaluate different historiographical approaches to the study of the Middle Ages
• acquire in-depth knowledge in the research of medieval history, discussing critically the existing historiographical production and understanding the relation between historiography, present and past.
• develop further their critical and synthetic abilities to produce a written essay with the use of sources and bibliography
• improve their ability to assess and evaluate historical questions through appropriate argumentation
• become familiar with interdisciplinary approaches to the thematic unit

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course examines the formation of medieval history through the evolution of historiography from the middle of the 20th century onwards. Emphasis is laid on the Annales, New Cultural History, gender history and post-colonial studies. In this framework students will study the research of important historians, such as Marc Bloch, Georges Duby, Jacques Le Goff etc. Moreover, the course aims at highlighting the interdisciplinarity in the historical research, by familiarizing the students with analytical tools of social anthropology, literary studies and art history.

Student Assessment
Description
Evaluation is based on (a) written exams (50% of the overall grade), followed by (b) oral exams (30%) on a given list of books dealing with the thematic unit, and (c) the submission of a written essay of up to 5,000 words (20%), based on sources and literature to be delivered by the end of the course. The criteria of assessment include the bibliographical research, the critical approach to the sources , the quality of writing, and the proper and consistent use of a reference system. A manual for academic essay-writing is available on the Department’s webpage.
