Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will acquire the following knowledge, skills, and competencies:
• Knowledge: (i) Identify and describe the fundamental principles of ergospirometry and the assessment of aerobic and anaerobic capacity, specifically applied to team sports, (ii) Understand the theoretical protocols for measuring VO₂max and determining ventilatory and lactate thresholds, as used in evaluating athletes in football, basketball, handball, volleyball, and other team sports, and (iii) Comprehend the significance of performance assessment as a tool for individualized training program design in the context of team sports.
• Skills: (i) Accurately apply laboratory and field protocols for aerobic and anaerobic capacity testing, tailored to the demands of team sport athletes, (ii) Calculate, record, and evaluate performance results from VO₂max tests, ventilatory and lactate thresholds, as well as anaerobic assessments such as the Wingate or sport-specific intermittent field tests, and (iii) Analyze ergometric data using up-to-date tools and scientific methods, providing valid and practical feedback to coaching and performance staff.
• Competencies: (i) Design, adapt, and evaluate training programs based on ergometric data and the specific energy demands of team sports, (ii) Collaborate effectively with peers and coaching staff during laboratory sessions and field assessments, demonstrating professionalism and responsibility, and (iii) Select and implement appropriate assessment methods depending on the purpose of testing, the sport, and the athletes’ training level.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Course Aim and Description
The course "Ergometric Evaluation of Aerobic and Anaerobic Capacity in Team Sports" focuses on both the theoretical foundation and practical specialization of students in the methods used to assess aerobic and anaerobic capacity within the context of team sports. Participants will be trained in the fundamental principles of cardiopulmonary exercise testing and in the application of protocols for measuring maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂max), ventilatory threshold, lactate threshold, and anaerobic capacity. Assessment techniques include both laboratory-based methods, such as treadmill and cycle ergometer tests with gas analysis, and field-based protocols like the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test, 30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test, and the Wingate Anaerobic Test. Special emphasis is placed on the interpretation of ergometric data and its translation into the development of individualized and sport-specific training interventions aimed at optimizing performance. The course combines theoretical lectures, laboratory-based exercises, and field/outdoor applications, providing a comprehensive approach to performance evaluation in team sports.
