Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
• Understand the soils as a medium of forest vegetation growth.
• Understand the basic functions of the soil organisms and the ecology of the forest soils.
• Know the importance and the decomposition cycle of organic matter in forest soils.
• Know about the soil nutrients and ways of managing them to improve the fertility and productivity of forest soils.
• Understand how water works and its impacts on forest soils.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Soil as a medium of forest vegetation growth. Biological properties of forest soils, organic matter - forest floor - soil organisms. Nutrient recycling in forest-soil ecosystems. Forest soils and hydrological cycle. Effects of clear-cutting and thinning, grazing, agricultural cultivation and wild fires on forest soils. Forest nursery soils. Soils provide plants with the elements they need, mainly in the form of dissolved inorganic ions or inorganic nutrients. Nutrients include both metals, such as calcium, potassium, iron and copper, and non-metals, such as nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus and boron. The plant takes up these nutrients from the soil solution and incorporates most of them into thousands of different organic compounds, which constitute plant tissues.

• Nitrogen and sulfur in soils
• Phosphorus and potassium in soils
• Calcium, magnesium and micronutrients
• Nutrient management practices
• Soil erosion and its control
