Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1)They know the historical evoluation and contemporary trends of Silviculture at a global level.
2)They know the scientific terminology and the distinction and characteristics of forests, and the discipline of Silviculture.
3) They know the management and silvicultural types of forests, their creation and the apropriate silvicultural measures for each of them.
4)Know the regeneration methods for every forest stand type.
5)Know the silvicultural measures applied in each developmental stage for the even-aged forests, and those must be applied in uneven-aged forests (all-aged and group selection forests).
6) They can plan appropriate silvicultural treatments for forests, in relation to climate change.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Trends and historical evolution of Silviculture worldwide. Modern approaches and traditional Silviculture. Scientific terminology of characteristics and distinction of forests. Stand knowledge (distinction of forest stands according to their establishment method, structure and composition), pure and mixed stands, silvicultural management unit. Characteristics of natural undisturbed forest. Even-aged stands, uneven-aged stands, all-aged stands, advantages and disadvantages. Seed origin forests (high forests), coppice forest, intermediate types. Types of cuttings, clear-cutting, single-tree, shade, crasped, regeneration cutting, fruiting type. Natural forest regeneration, under canopy, gap regeneration, in post-forest environments. Basic methods and techniques of natural regeneration. Regeneration with shady successional fellings, regeneration with craspedic fellings, regeneration in clusters. Determining the general and special regeneration time, regeneration centers, ways of expanding and combining them. Regeneration of the entire stand. Artificial establishment of forests. Stages of forest development. Cultivation (Tending) of the forest, general principles, cultivation measures. Cultivation of newly establishement stands, thickets, mature stands, pruning, cultivation of secondary stands. Tending of all-aged stands. Conversion of coppice forests to high forest. The current state of our Greek forests and the driving factors led to it. Rehabilitation of degraded forests, ennobling thinnings. Single-tree selection practice in the field.
