Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the courses and a visit to Archives, students are expected a. to be familiar with the methodology of historical research, b. to recognize various kinds of sources, c. to use primary sources for the composition of a historical essay, as well as for the teaching of History, d. to be able to write a research plan, and d. to have basic knowledge of medieval paleography.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The course examines the primary sources to study medieval history and familiarize students with the most important auxiliary sciences of the aforementioned research field. Emphasis will be on paleography. Moreover, the course introduces students to the archival research (a visit to an archive is obligatory), and it presents methods of criticism of sources. Finally, the course deals with the composition and presentation of written assignments and familiarize students with the academic ethics of scholarly writing.

Week #3 Primary sources for the study of medieval history. The concept of archive. Familiarization with important archives and digital databases.

Week #9 Kinds of secondary historical sources. Strategies of bibliographic search. Basic digital databases
