Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able:
1) To record and evaluate the functions and values of protected areas and biodiversity, and the factors affecting them.
2) To have the scientific basis for the management and protection of protected areas and biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems.
3) To analyze and evaluate the landscape and diagnose existing problems.
4) To manage and shape the natural and artificial landscape vegetation.
5) To have the background and skills necessary for environmental impact studies and rehabilitation of the environment.
6) To have the necessary skills for planning and restore disturbed lands.
Course Content (Syllabus)
A) Introduction to Nature Protection, definitions. Contemporary research trends in the field of nature protection. Value of biodiversity, risks and need to protect it. Nature protection methods. Protected natural areas - categories of protected natural areas in Greece and internationally. Protected species of flora and fauna at international and national level. Nature protection in Greece, historical development and current situation. NATURA 2000 network, European directives 92/43 (directive on habitats and species) and 79/409 (directive on avian fauna), B) Analysis of natural landscape, management of natural landscape. Vegetation in landscape planning. Creation of artificial landscape. Silvcultutral treatments in recreational forests and aesthetic forests. Characteristics and benefits of road-edge vegetation. c) Human activities and landscape. National framework for rehabilitation studies. Analysis of ecological and environmental impacts on the landscape, the environment and humans. Environmental impact studies. Principles of ecological restoration. Objectives, methods and techniques of land rehabilitation. Selection of land uses after restoration, criteria and selection process. Landscape restoration. Selection of plant species, and vegetation establshment techniques. Care measures after recovery. Monitoring the success of the restoration.
