Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students are expected to:
- familiarize themselves with the basic concepts of lexicology with an emphasis on the notion of 'word', its definition (from a cross-linguistic perspective), and its study at various levels of linguistic analysis;
- learn about the types of dictionaries and their characteristics,
- get familiar with the basic lexicographic principles, as well as the methods and tools for creating dictionaries,
- understand the factors and criteria that shape the macrostructure and microstructure of a dictionary,
- be able to participate in the design of lexicographic specifications based on the intended dictionary users or uses,
- be able to participate in lexicographic projects linking theory with practice.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This is an introductory course to Lexicology and Lexicography (with special reference to Metalexicography). After a brief introduction to basic concepts, we will focus on (a) the definition of the word from a cross-linguistic perspective and (b) aspects of the analysis of 'word' at various levels of linguistic analysis (morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics). Subsequently, a brief overview of the history of lexicography and dictionaries follows, and a typology of dictionaries will be presented. The focus is on dictionary structure, with an emphasis on contemporary methods and tools needed for dictionary compilation (corpora, databases, dictionary management tools), and related standards. Special attention will be paid to dictionary specifications based on user requirements in settings such as translation, language teaching and learning, documentation of dialects and idiomaticity, and within the context of Language Technology. The emphasis is placed on theoretical, methodological and practical issues in lexicography and metalexicography. The course is organized as follows:

5. Dictionary: definition and types
6. Electronic lexicography: principles, methods, and tools
7. Electronic lexicography: dictionary organization (microstructure - macrostructure)
8. From theory to practice. Neology, neologisms, and the life cycle of words
9. Lexicography and translation: bilingual, multilingual, and bilingualized dictionaries and lexical databases - Pedagogical lexicography - Dialectal lexicography and dialect dictionaries
10. Metalexicography: research in lexicography. Dictionary criticism
11. Lexicography and standardization
12. Technology and Lexicography (Technology in the service of lexicography and terminography: from databases to ChatGPT vs Lexicography in the service of technology: computational lexicography and computational dictionaries).
13. Presentation of students' porjects.
