Learning Outcomes
With the successful completition of this course the students will: Cognitive • Describe with critical understanding and details the important events and developments of the history, theology and textual tradition of Islam • Elaborate on the ethnic, cultural and religious groups that relate to Islam as they have been formed over the centuries Competencies • Manage historical knowledge and perspectives to understand complex and multifaceted forms of identity, intercultural diversity and integration issues related to Islam around the globe • Develop arguments in which they reconsider and, when necessary, revise conventional academic and popular perceptions • Evaluate the ways in which the claim by social groups for a single narrative regarding tradition and history creates new forms of polarization Skills • Use primary and secondary sources, libraries and related new technologies to study the History and Theology of Islam on a range of topics

• The Middle East before Islam • The life of the Prophet Muhammad and the emergence of Islam • The wars of apostasy and the rightly guided caliphs • The expasnion of Islam (futuh) • The disintegration of the community and the creation of Muhakkima • Alids and the genesis of Shiism • Zaydis and Isma'ilis • Imami Shi'ism and Iran • Imamate and caliphate, Turks, Persians, Arabs • Quran, Sunnah, Islamic Law • Islam and its rituals in history • Islam, history and modernity
